On the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the federal law banning sex discrimination in education programs receiving federal funds, the Biden administration has proposed new regulations governing its enforcement.

According to the Department of Education, the new rules would, among other things, “protect LGBTQI+ students from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics…and protect the right of parents and guardians to support their elementary and secondary school children.”

There is a 60-day comment period for the public to provide feedback once the official amendments are published in the Federal Register. You can view an unofficial version of the proposed regulations here, FAQs, and a summary chart of the major proposed revisions.
