Starting August 5th, elementary students in Atlanta Public Schools will be in school 30 minutes longer to help students who are struggling with instruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the district’s elementary schools start at 8 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m.

This extended day will allow schools to target students who may have experienced a learning loss due to schools being closed from March 2020 until February 2021.

“All schools are required to implement an intervention, acceleration or enrichment block during the school day and in order to accommodate this requirement at the elementary level, 30 minutes will be added to the elementary school day.” Chief of Schools, Anita Williams told board members.

There has not been a specific scheduled shared to determine how the schedule will fit in the additional time.
