Clayton County Public Schools breaks ground on new convocation center and college and career academy.

Atlanta, GA — Clayton County Public Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday for the Clayton County Convocation Center & College and Career Academy which will be located at the former Sears Building site at Southlake Mall in Morrow, Georgia.

The groundbreaking ceremony unveiled plans for an 8,000-seat arena and convention center that will also house a Junior Achievement Center, a College and Career Academy, along with various office spaces, a rooftop terrace, and more. When opened, the Clayton County Convocation Center & College and Career Academy will be a multipurpose facility, with state-of-the-art amenities, and will serve as an educational hub that can be used by the broader community.

Attendees at the event included Dr. Anthony W. Smith, CCPS Superintendent/CEO, and Clayton County Board of Education (CCBOE) members: Ms. Jessie Goree, Board Chair, Mr. Benjamin Straker, Vice Chair, Dr. Deatrice “Dee” Haney Ms. Victoria Williams, Mary Baker, Ms. Sabrina Hill, and Ms. Joy Tellis Cooper. Also in attendance were: Clayton County Board of Commissioners Chairman, Mr. Jeffrey Turner; Clayton County Public Schools Foundation Inc. Executive Director, Ms. Nina Packer; City of Morrow Mayor, Mr. John Lampl; CCPS Chief of Capital Improvement and Strategic Improvement, Mr. Ronick Joseph; Perkins & Will Architect, Mr. Jared Serwer; and MEJA Construction Inc. General Contractor, Mr. Sean Gable.

The Clayton County Convocation Center & College and Career Academy will open its doors in 2025 and will become the host site for Clayton County Public Schools graduation ceremonies.
