Due to the potential for significant flooding and Georgia being in the path of Hurricane Helene, several school districts have adjusted their plans for classes, athletic events, and after-school activities.
Hurricane Helene has intensified into a Category 1 storm with winds reaching 80 mph as of Wednesday morning. The storm is expected to move through Georgia and into the metro Atlanta area late Thursday night into Friday morning. Additionally, a line of heavy rain and storms is currently passing through north Georgia in advance of Helene.
Below are the school districts and institutions that have provided updates regarding their schedules:
Atlanta Public Schools
- All APS schools will be closed Thursday and Friday. District office employees will work remotely. An update will be provided Friday afternoon concerning Saturday activities.
Atlanta Technical College
- All campuses will operate virtually on Thursday and Friday.
Banks County Schools
- Schools will be closed Thursday and Friday for both students and staff. All sports and extracurricular activities are canceled.
Bartow County Schools
- All schools will be closed Thursday and Friday for students and staff.
Butts County Schools
- Schools will be closed Friday.
Calhoun City Schools
- Schools will be closed Thursday and Friday. All Thursday activities are canceled.
Carroll County Schools
- All extracurricular activities on Thursday, September 26, are canceled. Friday will be a Distance Learning Day, with all staff working remotely. A decision on Friday night football games will be announced later.
Cherokee County Schools
- All schools will be closed Thursday and Friday.
Clark Atlanta University
- The campus will close at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and operate remotely on Friday.
Clarke County Schools
- After-school activities on Thursday are canceled. Schools will remain open Thursday but will be closed Friday.
Clayton County Schools
- A virtual learning day will be held Thursday, and schools will be closed Friday. All athletic events and extracurricular activities scheduled for Thursday through Saturday are canceled.
City of Decatur Schools
- All schools and extracurricular activities will be closed on Thursday and Friday.
DeKalb County Schools
- All schools and activities will be closed Thursday and Friday.
Douglas County Schools
- Schools will operate on a normal schedule Thursday, September 26, but all after-school activities are canceled. Schools will be closed Friday.
Emory University
- All campuses, including Oxford College, will transition to remote work and virtual learning on Thursday and Friday.
Fulton County Schools
- After-school activities on Thursday are canceled, and schools and central offices will be closed Friday.
Georgia College & State University
- Classes and activities will be suspended Thursday and Friday.
Georgia Tech
- Georgia Tech will transition to Modified Operations and Digital Learning Days on Thursday and Friday.
Gordon County Schools
- Schools will be closed Thursday and Friday. All Thursday activities are canceled.
Griffin-Spalding County Schools
- Schools will be closed Thursday and Friday.
Gwinnett County Schools
- Schools will operate a digital learning day Thursday, with all after-school activities canceled. Schools will be closed Friday, and all weekend activities are canceled.
Habersham County Schools
- Schools will be closed Thursday and Friday.
Hall County Schools
- Schools will conduct remote learning on Thursday and Friday. All extracurricular activities are canceled.
Henry County Schools
- Schools will be closed Thursday and Friday, with all related activities canceled.
Jackson County Schools
- Normal operations will continue Thursday, but all extracurricular activities are canceled. Schools will be closed Friday.
Kennesaw State University
- The university will be closed Thursday and Friday.
Meriwether County Schools
- Schools will transition to remote learning Thursday and Friday.
Morehouse College and Morehouse School of Medicine
- Both institutions will close at 2:30 p.m. Thursday and operate remotely on Friday.
Newton County Schools
- Schools and district offices will be closed Thursday and Friday. Saturday events will continue as planned unless otherwise stated.
Paulding County Schools
- All extracurricular activities are canceled Thursday and Friday. Schools and offices will be closed both days.
Pickens County Schools
- Digital learning will take place Thursday. Schools and offices will be closed Friday.
Polk County Schools
- Schools will have remote learning on Thursday and Friday. Decisions about after-school activities and athletics are pending.
Rockdale County Schools
- Remote learning will take place Thursday. Schools will be closed Friday.
Spelman College
- The campus will close at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, and classes will be held remotely Friday.
Troup County Schools
- Schools and system offices will be closed Thursday and Friday. After-school activities are canceled or rescheduled, with decisions on Saturday events to follow.
Union County Schools
- Remote learning will be observed Thursday and Friday. All weekend extracurricular activities are canceled.
University of Georgia
- The main campus will be closed Thursday and Friday, with all in-person classes and events canceled.
