Overview:
Georgia has launched the Georgia Promise Scholarship, a $6,500 school voucher program aimed at providing educational alternatives for students in low-performing schools. Eligible families can use the funds for private school tuition, textbooks, tutoring, and other approved educational expenses starting in 2025.
The Georgia Office of Student Achievement has identified hundreds of elementary, middle, and high schools across the state as low-performing. In response, the state is rolling out the Georgia Promise Scholarship, a school voucher program designed to provide new educational opportunities for affected families.
The Georgia Promise Scholarship offers eligible students a $6,500 voucher that can be used for private school tuition, textbooks, tutoring, transportation, and other approved educational expenses.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Georgia Promise Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in a Georgia public school during the 2024-25 school year or be entering kindergarten in the 2025-26 school year.
- Reside in the attendance zone of a low-performing public school as identified by the Georgia Office of Student Achievement.
- Have parents who have lived in Georgia for more than one year (exceptions apply for active-duty military families).
- Not be recipients of other state scholarships, such as the Georgia Special Needs Scholarship or the Georgia Student Scholarship Organization funds.
Priority Considerations
If funding is limited, priority will be given to:
- Students from families earning up to 400% of the federal poverty level.
- Students who have already received a scholarship in previous years.
“The federal poverty level used to determine eligibility is defined annually by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,” the program’s website states.
Application Timeline
The application portal is expected to open in early 2025, with funding becoming available after July 1. Families interested in applying for the program should monitor updates from the Georgia Promise Scholarship website for more information.
This initiative aims to give families greater control over their children’s education, ensuring that every student has the chance to succeed, regardless of their school’s performance.
