The Atlanta Board of Education voted unanimously to extend interim superintendent Dr. Danielle S. Battle’s contract through December 31, 2024. Dr. Battle’s original contract was set to expire on June 30.
“Continuing this important work to illuminate the vision established by the ABOE is exactly what I am driven to do,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Danielle Battle. “The students, and the community, benefit from the literacy initiative being fulfilled by APS, and I am honored to lead that charge and happy to have more time to see it through.”
This announcement comes after the board, via press release yesterday, extended the search for a permanent superintendent, citing the need to bring a candidate to the public who matched the leadership profile by Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, the search firm leading the work with the school district.
In a press release, Atlanta Board of Education Chair Erika Mitchell spoke that the search extension allows Dr. Battle to continue making progress with the literacy initiative designed to “provide APS schools with a comprehensive and coherent roadmap for implementing high-quality literacy instruction in every classroom.”
Dr. Battle has been a long-time leader in Atlanta Public Schools, serving as a former teacher, principal, associate superintendent, and now interim superintendent. In her interim status, Dr. Battle is facing several large-scale initiatives for the current school year and beyong, including a funding gap for the 2024-2025 school year, declining enrollment, and the implementation of the APS PreK-12 Literacy Plan.
