The Atlanta Board of Education has officially announced plans to begin the search for a new superintendent. This comes after the announcement this past June to replace the current Superintendent, Dr. Lisa Herring, after announcing they would not be extending her contract beyond June 2024.
The high-level timeline starts in July 2023 with the Board of Education, hiring a search firm, developing an application for potential superintendent candidates, and more. There will be a public announcement of the vacancy in September 2022 with community meetings and surveys to the community, with recruitment beginning the same month.
“We have aggressive goals for Atlanta Public Schools, and we are committed to taking all the necessary steps to put people and processes in place to realize those objectives,” said Eshé Collins, ABOE Board Chair. “We will work diligently with our staff, students, parents and the community to select a transformative leader to elevate our students and schools and ensure success in an ever-changing and competitive environment.”
With active recruitment starting in September, from October 2023- November 2023, the potential candidates will be screened, detailed reference and background checks, several rounds of interviews, and more, with a final candidate being announced sometime in April/May 2024.
According to Georgia law, all final candidates for superintendency must be announced at least 14 calendar days prior to the meeting at which final action or vote is to be taken on the position.
The new superintendent is expected to start in July 2024.
