The Dekalb County Board of Education proposed an increase in property taxes in a statement Tuesday.

The increase will levy by 8.06 percentage points and will result in a millage rate of 23.08 mills — a 1.721 increase, according to the statement. The Board of Tax Assessors is required by Georgia law to review the value of taxable property in the county and adjust as needed on an annual basis, according to the statement.

When the total catalog of property taxes is completed, the law requires that taxes be increased to meet the same value as before, according to the statement.

Three budget hearings will be held to give the public the opportunity to discuss the property tax increase, the district states. These hearings will be held Monday at 11 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. and June 21 at 10 a.m. In order to participate in the hearings, call 678-676-0722 or email budget_info@dekalbschoolsga.org
